Continuing the Journey

The last time I posted on this blog it was the spring of 2022. I didn’t realize it had been that long, but as we begin a new year we often take time to reflect on what has been.

For me, this writing interruption was related to personal events that forced me to breathe, reflect and reboot. I’ve always believed that things happen for a reason, but it also takes distance to understand the why. With some distance I’m able to accept what was and embrace what will be.

Part of that is embracing the identity of writer. Most people would probably find it interesting to know that while most English teachers enjoy writing, we find it hard to think of ourselves as writers. Perhaps it’s because we spend so much time reading the works of published / iconic writers, it can be hard to see the quality and genius in our own work. And we often tell ourselves that there’s a difference between a “writer” and a “Writer.” The capital letter changes the game.

At NCTE this year I attended several panels where authors talked about their craft and experiences as writers. They not only shared information about their own work, but also talked about the process and struggles they have faced as writers. It was encouraging and uplifting to hear them share their experiences and challenges, which helped me to commit to living my own writerly life.

So in 2024 I am recommitting to writing. To embracing the empty page, moving past it, and jotting down my thoughts and ideas. I’m acknowledging the messy, non-linear process, which means sometimes starting in the middle as a way to get to the beginning or end. I’m reminding myself that my story matters, and it’s my job to tell it.

What are you embracing for the new year? What journey will you continue?

Let’s find out. Together.
